There’s also nothing like breaking trail on a couple feet of fresh powder in Bear Basin, our favorite spot to snowshoe once the storm has passed and we awaken to cobalt blue skies and crisp conditions.
If you can walk, you can go snow shoeing—very affordable and low impact, the sport can be learned easily. If you’re just getting started consider any of the Nordic areas such as Ponderosa State Park or Tamarack Resort. Tamarack has 10K of dog friendly snow shoe trails and offers guided tours and equipment rentals. So does Jug Mountain Ranch with an 11 mile network of groomed trails through the backcountry. In McCall, you can rent snow shoes at Gravity Sports and Hometown Sports.
